Your Bowen Session

Assessment

Assessment is a vital start to any session – how straight are you? Are your leg lengths the same, where are the tensions in tissue or muscle, is your sacrum aligned? Much of this occurs with you facedown on a standard couch with face hole.

Fascia Bowen

Very briefly, fascia is a tissue covering bone, muscle, ligament. blood vessels. It’s thin, made of collagen and contains tissue fluid. It acts as the lubricating tissue allowing free movement of our bodies.

There will be times when I use a combination of the rolling type Bowen movements and stretchy movements which move larger areas of tissue/fascia. It depends on how you are……..we talk about that. I repeatedly find this is a good mix but on its own, it can be less challenging to the body and is particularly helpful for those troubled by some auto immune illnesses eg. fibromyalgia. Sadly it’s not a cure but it helps the pain and your movement.

.Lymphatic Bowen

Lymph is fluid, some of it is within the fascia. There’s about 15L of it of which some 8L are replaced daily. At the most simplistic I can think of, movement helps pump it around the body. Reduced movement can reduce the exchange and it hangs around in your tissues and can make the fascia sticky = more reduced movement, discomfort, pain.

It follows that where I can assess that an increase in lymph is part of or causative of some of your issues, addressing this is enormously helpful in its self and allows the standard Bowen moves to have better effect.

I love clients to look things up and when it comes to fascia and lymph I positively encourage you to “check it out”.

Bowen therapy as practised today is the work of Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong, Australia. It came to the UK in 1993.

It is a dynamic discipline now just as it is reported to have been for Mr. Bowen who developed his technique and understanding over many years. This is best demonstrated through the work and teaching of those who I suggest are todays “greats” of Bowen namely, John Garfield, Graham Pennington and Ron Phelan. This is not to undervalue the other incredibly informed and dynamic teachers and practitioners out there some of whom I have not met. It has been an absolute privilege to meet those I have and to be taught by them.

About Me

An S.R.N (UCH trained) and A&E Senior Nurse in central London. I left the NHS in 1990 and went on to other things having gained my LLB (Hons) (University of London) in 1993. I gained my Bowen certificate in 2017 and have been in practice ever since, initially in Cornwall where we lived until late 2019.

I had read about the benefits of Bowen but never experienced it until consulting Annie. It has been a wonderful help for an entrenched balance issue from a severe ankle sprain sustained many years ago. I have found the Bowen sessions have settled my sleep patterns and helped with stress.Annie is professional and gentle and the whole experience is fabulous. Bowen is such a relaxing and gentle therapy. I have recommended Annie to many of my friends.

I was getting very worried about the pain in my hip, thinking that I may need to have surgery. In my first Bowen session the pain eased by about half and had gone completely after the second session. I had my third session and my hip has remained pain free since January 2016

I have lived with painful shoulders, often with severe restriction in movement, for many years. My right shoulder was particularly bad. Annie suggested that Bowen could help and explained that the system of gentle rolling moves allowed the body to re-set. It was a completely new therapy to me, very relaxing and not at all painful. Best of all, after the third treatment both shoulders had stopped hurting and I had a normal range of movement. More remarkably, a year later my shoulders are still great, allowing me to swim twice a week and use a full range of gym equipment. I have no hesitation in recommending Bowen and Annie

– Mrs F. St Agnes, Cornwall

I broke my shoulder very badly about 6 years ago and was very worried when it started to ache and became painful to move. It got worse quickly and I couldn’t move it without a lot of pain, it seized up and I couldn’t sleep. My wife had seen Annie and made an appointment for me. The first visit made no difference at all but I have to admit, after the second I had less pain and better movement and by the third, all the pain had gone and movement and sleep were back to normal. Since the follow up visit a month later I have had no problems with that shoulder at all and 18 months later can say that it remains as good as ever.
